Application for Associateship Distinction - Travel - 6th October 2004 - Richard Long.

In October 2004 I was very pleased to obtain my Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in the Travel Category. My Statement of Intent which accompanied the above portfolio was :-

These Maasai people live in Kenya, approximately 100 miles west of Nairobi and 40 miles south of Narok, which by Western standards is in the middle of nowhere. Their homes are made of mud and without electricity. Water is obtained from ponds or a river, which necessitates a walk of over one mile from the village, by the women. Despite what may seem to be primitive conditions they are a very happy and content group of people.

The prints show the beauty of the people, the striking colours of their clothes and jewellery and are contrasted with the environment that is their home.

I give grateful thanks to the wonderful Maasai people who allowed me to become an intimate part of their lives and to share this visual record with others.
